Why Should I Care About EMFs?

“Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is the emerging health problem of the 21st century. It is imperative health practitioners, governments, schools and parents learn more about it. The human health stakes are significant.” – William Rea, MD, Founder & Director of the Environmental Health Center in Dallas & Past President of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine

Scientists disagree about the impact of electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) on human health.  Despite this many experts express concern. It’s important to be aware and use caution as emerging data piles up about the possible links of adverse health effects due to increased usage of technology as our behaviour changes and we become increasingly dependent on electrical devices. Wondering what EMFs are? Read all the nitty gritty details here.

Here’s why you should be concerned: ‘’Tiny electrical currents exist in the human body due to the chemical reactions that occur as part of the normal bodily functions, even in the absence of external electric fields. For example, nerves relay signals by transmitting electric impulses. Most biochemical reactions from digestion to brain activities go along with the rearrangement of charged particles. Even the heart is electrically active – an activity that your doctor can trace with the help of an electrocardiogram (ECG).’’ – World Health Organization

It stands to reason that because we have our own electromagnetic systems in our bodies, we should keep an inquisitive mind and be open to the possibility that external EMFs may cause damage when they disrupt our own inner frequencies. A long-term exposure to anything that causes stress on the system, to which the body is unable to adapt due to overwhelm, is harmful to health.  Yes, our bodies have sophisticated adaptation mechanisms and can deal with change – but combine EMF exposure with air pollution, chronic prescription drug use, pesticides in food, consumption of processed foods with artificial colours/flavours and a stressful lifestyle – what is the limit on our ability to adapt?

You may have heard of the ‘Precautionary Principle’, which places a duty on policy makers to prevent harm, even when all the evidence is not in. But fear not! Just because policy makers aren’t taking action on EMFs doesn’t mean you can’t practice the Precautionary Principle in your own life. Awareness is the key to protecting yourself and your family while the scientific jury is out.  All month long I will be sharing info about what we do know and tips on how to use more caution with EMFs.

Inner Inquiry

Set yourself up for success with honest answers to these simple questions:

  • Are you exposed to EMFs for most of the day in your home and/or work?
  • If you could take simple measures to decrease the effects of EMFs, would you?
  • Are you pushing your limits of adaptation with mutliple stresses impacting your health?
