Detox Your Life with a Singular Principle

Simplicity [sim-plis-i-tee]

Noun. Definition: the state, quality, or an instance of being simple.

Simplicity is the common principle among the endless potential cleansing programs out there. Eat simply, breathe easy, shed your burdens, reconnect to your body – these messages are repeated in the detoxification literature.

Here are some other definitions of ‘simplicity’: freedom from complexity or division into parts, absence of pretentiousness; freedom from deceit or guile; sincerity; naturalness.

Couldn’t we all use a little more freedom, sincerity, and less pretentiousness and deceit? I think we can agree on this one. The question is: in today’s chaotic world, how do we achieve simplicity?

How to Simplify Your Life

These processes can help you narrow in on some ways to reduce your stress, streamline your activities and feel great while cleansing:

1. Create a vision of your ideal health and life. If you could be in optimal health, what would that allow you to do? Writing out your vision will allow you to focus on what is most important to you. Keep a succinct version of this posted somewhere you can see everyday and re-read it to be reminded of your motivation.

2. Evaluate your use of technology. Are you attached to your phone? A slave to your inbox? Technology is best used when you are in control of it, and not the other way around. Plan regular digital sabbaticals where you ditch the internet for a weekend to connect in person with those you love and to do what you love doing.

3. Take a good look at your schedule. How are you spending your time? Compare this with your health and life vision. Do they match up? If you are using your time for things that are not priorities for you, re-consider this. There is no more important resource than your time, and once consumed, can never be returned to you.

4. Purge possessions. De-cluttering your home and office can really take a weight off your shoulders. Dedicate a day to sort through what you need and what you can donate or toss. Cleansing your living space is a great relief that frees up more space, and often time.

5. Examine your relationships. Are you hanging onto relationships that are unfulfilling? As Jim Rohn, a thought leader in personal development, says: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Would you be honoured to be an average of the five people you have the most contact with? If not, change that. Unhappy relationships can drain your energy and complicate your life. Nourish your great relationships and spend quality time with your favourite five.

Simplifying your life is not a one-time deal. Repeating these processes of simplification regularly (perhaps seasonally) along with a detox program will yield the best results. You don’t have healthy teeth because you brushed them once, and the same goes for simplifying and cleansing. Simplifying and cleansing must become regular habits. Remember, simplicity is not about losing something; it’s all about what you gain in the process of paring down and cherishing what is most important to you.
